Costa Rican teenager Eduardo Juárez Viales has a had a chance to display the skill that earned him a spot on his country’s U20 World Cup squad in front of the Bethlehem Steel FC technical staff this week.

The 18-year-old central midfielder is part of the youth setup for Costa Rican club LD Alajuelense and has represented Costa Rica in both the U20 and U17 World Cups.

Costa Rican media reported last week that Juárez would be on a 10-day trial with the Philadelphia Union, but as was the case with Haitian youth international Ronaldo Damus in early June, his trial appears to be for a potential USL roster spot.

Costa Rican full international Elías Aguilar was brought in for a training stint with the first team in late June, but the attacking midfielder was, according to Union head coach Jim Curtin, “not a fit” for the team.

Trialists and guest players are a regular occurrence for the Steel, particularly in the summer months when college players from the area are back home and PDL affiliate Reading United is in season.

Among the other guest players spotted in training this week were Reading United players Paul Marie and Alexandre Bouillennec, Philadelphia Union Academy and Reading United defender Lamine Conte and Lehigh University and West Chester United goalkeeper Will Smith.
