Veteran goalkeeper coach with Union staff at MLS Combine

Veteran goalkeeper coach Tim Hanley is with the Philadelphia Union technical staff for the MLS Combine in Orlando and appears to be on his way to filling the vacancy on the technical staff.

A Union spokesman said Sunday that the club is “in the process of finalizing an agreement with Tim.”

The goalkeeper coach position opened up in Chester when Oka Nikolov took a job with the LA Galaxy in November.

Hanley, a 57-year-old former goalkeeper who played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Earthquakes in the original NASL, served three stints and a total of 11 seasons coaching for his hometown San Jose Earthquakes before parting ways with the team in November. He has also held technical staff positions with the LA Galaxy (2007), Houston Dynamo (2009-2014) and Stanford University (2001-2005).

Goalkeepers he’s worked with over the years include Joe Cannon, Pat Onstad, Tim Howard, Kasey Keller, Aston, Pa. native Jon Conway, Kevin Hartman, Nick Rimando, Zach Thorton, Donovan Ricketts, Dave Bingham, Tyler Deric, Andrew Tarbell, Tally Hall, David Kramer and Josh Saunders.

Goalkeeper coach is one of two assistant positions that opened up on Jim Curtin’s staff this offseason. Mike Sorbers left to join Bob Bradley’s staff at Los Angeles FC and USMNT assistant Pat Noonan is reportedly the leading candidate to take over.
