Our Trey Madara captured the pregame festivities as well as the match itself, while managing Editor Eugene Rupinski gives a bit of a pep talk, thanks in part to the writings of Thomas Paine.
It was Thomas Paine who wrote “These are the times that try men’s souls,” While this was written about the impending American Revolutionary War, the same could be said about the Philadelphia Union’s current season. The wild swings – from not winning for nine months to winning four straight to now losing three straight are enough to test the resolve of even the Union’s hardiest of fans.
In The American Crisis, Paine also wrote "Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." Tyranny left in October of 2015, and the hell of this season will not be easily conquered. But the sentiment from 240 years ago still rings true today. These conflicts are incredibly difficult – for players and fans alike. But when the triumph comes – and it will come – it will indeed be glorious.
