Rate the U: So much winning

This winning thing sure is fun, isn’t it?

The Philadelphia Union kept up their winning ways, picking up their fourth straight league win. their fifth away win and 12th win of the season with a 2-0 win over D.C. United to match the club’s best ever single-season marks in all three categories with eight MLS matches and an Open Cup final remaining.

C.J. Sapong stole a lot of the headlines for cleaning up a rebound off a Cory Burke shot and setting up the second goal, but Fafa Picault deserved a lot of credit for the heavy lifting he did in the Union attack on Wednesday night. It was his ridiculous pass to C.J. in the middle of the park that started the attack that eventually led to the goal and his strike that forced D.C. United to have to futilely chase the game.

Borek Dockal picked up his 13th assist of the season to draw within one of Kaku for the league lead and was sharp all night moving the ball around the field. Alejandro Bedoya and Haris Medunjanin were also clicking again.

Seriously, who is this team right now?

The Union didn’t just win in D.C. Wednesday, they looked good doing it and while D.C. was able to move the ball well through the midfield and Wayne Rooney created a couple dangerous chances, their final ball was nowhere to be found. Andre Blake was barely troubled. When was the last time that’s happened; the Union won a game and Blake didn’t have to make any highlight-reel stops to do so?

All this to say, Keegan Rosenberry’s steady play should not be overlooked and how can we fuss about the partnership of Jack Elliott and Auston Trusty when they keep shutting teams out?

Elliott was perhaps fortunate to not give away a penalty when the ball hit off his hand in the box late in the first half but those are the kind of breaks that have been going the Union’s way during this win streak. Instead of mulling missed opportunities like they were too often early in the season, the Union are benefiting from the other team’s near misses and poor finishes while inching toward what seemed like an impossibility only six weeks ago: hosting a playoff game.
