Ryan Becher scored the game-winning goal for UMBC on Friday and just kept on running.

The Philadelphia Union Academy and YSC Academy grad from Hummelstown celebrated his goal by making a beeline for the sidelines and running up the steep hill at Retriever Soccer Park. It was the fifth goal of his career and first of the 2021 campaign for the second-year midfielder.

It was also the lone goal of the game in the 1-0 win over the University of Albany, scored off a set piece 57 seconds into overtime. The Retrievers improved to 2-1-1 on the season, having gone into overtime in three of their four games.

The celebration, like so many things during the past year, was in part a result of the pandemic. Family members and fellow student-athletes were permitted to attend for the first time this season but had to stay behind the fence at the top of the hill. Becher’s older brother, Jackson Becher, is also on the team.
