Medunjanin, Bosnia & Herzegovina fall to Mexico

Mexico eased past Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1-0, in a friendly at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Wednesday night.

Philadelphia Union midfielder Haris Medunjanin captained the Bosnians for the second straight match and finished with just one shot in a rather uneventful 90-minute performance. The skipper did, however, spend most of the match as a makeshift center back.

Mexico, preparing for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, spent the entirety of the match on the front foot but could not find a goal in the first half.

The only breakthrough came in the 66th minutes when Hugo Ayala was left wide open on a corner kick and guided a header from Jonathan dos Santos’ corner kick into the upper left corner of the net past Kenan Piric, the second string keeper.

Bosnia could not even mount much of a comeback attempt, as Mexico kept pressing on for a second goal that never came. Almir Bekic earned his second yellow card of the night in the 84th minute and was sent off for the visitors.

Since the Bosnians spent most of the game defending, finishing with just 32% possession, there was not much for Medunjanin to do with the ball. Maybe it was better for the Union man than his performance against the USA on Sunday, when he hit the post on a penalty kick.

The Bosnians are looking forward to the UEFA Nations League in September, where they are in a group in League B with Northern Ireland and Austria.
