Family, friends, coaches and teammates will gather to celebrate the life of Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent on Sunday afternoon at a place that was instrumental in his path to professional soccer: Vert Stadium at High Point University.

Trent, 25, died on October 26, “surrounded by close family and friends, his fiancé, Brie Losito, and a village of soccer teammates and coaches that supported him throughout his career,” according to his obituary.

A cause of death has not been released.

The North Carolina native spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Union after being drafted out of High Point in the first round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He made six starts over the past two seasons in MLS Next Pro for Philadelphia Union II but spent much of this season hampered by a hand injury.

Trent’s obituary reflects on his love of soccer and the many obstacles he overcame in his journey to the pro game.

“As a kid, he was rarely seen without a soccer ball,” the obituary states. “Holden figured out his passion in life at a very young age and committed himself to achieving his dreams. He faced numerous obstacles that would have stopped most, but he never gave up on his love for soccer.”

The obituary also notes that Trent was an organ donor and that his life “will live on through the numerous recipients whose miracles are being granted through his selflessness.”

A foundation and scholarship fund have been established in Trent’s memory.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Holden Trent Goal 13 Foundation, 1852 Banking St., Box 9601, Greensboro, NC 27408, an organization that will honor Holden’s legacy by helping other athletes or the Holden Trent Memorial Scholarship Fund, High Point University, Office of Institutional Advancement, Drawer 29, 1 University Pkwy, High Point, NC 27268. The scholarship will benefit a first generation player on the HPU Soccer Team that exudes leadership and dedication to the sport.
