Haris Medunjanin called up to the Bosnia and Herzegovina National Team

The Philadelphia Union’s 31-year-old Bosnian midfielder Haris Medunjanin has been called up to the Bosnia and Herzegovina squad for their upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Greece. He joins the likes of Edin Dzeko (AS Roma), Asmir Begovic (Chelsea), and Miralem Pjanic (Juventus) on the 28-man roster. Medunjanin has earned 54 caps since his debut in 2009 and his last appearance in 2016, tallying eight goals along the way.

Bosnia is currently in third place in their group, and could jump over Greece into second with a win. They are in a good position to eventually make the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The call-up comes during a 15-day International Break, so he won’t miss any games for the Union. Given the club’s stellar six game unbeaten streak, it’s nice to see that his absence will not disrupt the chemistry that has developed in the starting lineup over the past month. After a mediocre start to the season Medunjanin has found his stride, scoring two goals and tallying five assists. This uptick in form has coincided with his shift to a more defensive role in the midfield, where he sits deeper in the formation next to Alejandro Bedoya, which has given him more room to hit his lethal long balls and link up with Ilsinho and C.J. Sapong.

Hopefully things go well for Bosnia and Medunjanin so Union fans can root him on next year at the World Cup.
