Philadelphia Union Academy alums debut in college; local trio on USL Team of the Week

Dave Zeitlin wrote about Jordan Morris’ mentorship to Penn men’s soccer coach Rudy Fuller’s son Liam, who like Morris has type 1 diabetes.

Bob Kulinski was named the new head coach for the boys soccer team at Gloucester Catholic.

A trio of locals made the USL Team of the Week, including former Union Academy midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin (Malvern, Pa.), Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa.) and Greg Cochrane (Holland, Pa.)

Saint Joseph’s swept the first week of the Philly Soccer Six awards with Matt Crawford (Bensalem, Pa.) earning Player of the Week, Alan Kahlenbeck Rookie of the Week and Trevor Nicol Defensive player of the week.

Junior forward Mark Forrest (Douglassville, Pa.) scored a hat trick in a 3-2 win for Lehigh over Rider last Friday.

Andrew Verdi (Ivyland, Pa.) recorded his first clean sheet in his first college game for Michigan last Friday, a 1-0 win over William & Mary.

Sam Brown (Media, Pa.) received rookie of the week honors in the Patriot League after scoring a goal in his college debut for Loyola Maryland at La Salle last Friday night.

Union Academy alumnus Justin McMaster (Kingston, Jamaica) started of his college career on a good note with an assist in each of the team’s first two games.

Former Bethlehem Steel FC teammate Mark McKenzie (Bear, Del.) came off the bench in each of the Demon Deacons’ first two matches.

Penn Fusion and Salesianum School defender Brendan Hanrahan (Wilmington, Del.) has joined the Philadelphia Union Academy for his final season before graduating from high school in 2018. He plans to join the University of Pennsylvania’s team next fall.

Chad Poarch (Middletown, Del.) scored his first goal in a Blue Hens uniform in a 2-0 win or Delaware over Bryant on Monday. He had a goal and three assists in his first season in college last year at High Point.
