Three top 10 teams fall as NCAA field is narrowed to 16

Reading United star Frantzdy Pierrot had another big game on Sunday, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist to lead Coastal Carolina to a 3-1 win over in-state rival Clemson and a date with two-time defending champions Stanford in the Sweet 16.

Pierrot scored his second of the tournament just four minutes in, doubling the Chanticleers lead with a blast from 10 yards out. He set up Martin Melchor’s second of the game in the 50th minute.

Coastal is in the third round of the NCAAs for the fourth time as a program and the first time since 2013. Their opponent on Sunday, Stanford, won in familiar fashion on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw with Pacific.

Clemson, ranked fifth in the latest coaches poll, wasn’t the only top 10 team to fall on Sunday.

No. 8 Florida International were knocked out by the sixth-seeded and 16th-ranked Duke Blue Devils. Reading United standout Paul Marie scored for the Panthers but it wasn’t enough as they lost just their second match of the season by a 2-1 score. Philadelphia Union Academy grad Mo Conde (Philadelphia, Pa.) played 29 minutes off the bench in the match.

No. 10 Michigan’s loss to Colgate was the most shocking of the upsets on Sunday, considering that the Wolverines were up 2-0 through a Jack Hallahan brace inside 10 minutes. The three unanswered goals by Colgate gave the Raiders their seventh straight win in what has been the most unlikeliest of runs. The Patriot League Tournament champions had a stretch of five straight losses earlier this season and were 7-10-1 entering the postseason.

Notre Dame’s 1-0 loss to Wisconsin on an overtime goal from Mike Catalano means none of the teams in the 2013 College Cup in Chester will be making a return to Talen Energy Stadium in December. Virginia was upset by Fordham on an Eric Ohlendorf goal in the 83rd minute while Maryland fell in the first round and New Mexico didn’t qualify for the tournament.

Philadelphia Union Academy grads Dawson McCartney (Voorhees, N.J.) and Tiger Graham (Malvern, Pa.) saw their first seasons with Dartmouth come to a bitter end when New Hampshire advanced on penalties after a scoreless draw. McCartney started and played all 110 minutes while Graham played 15 minutes off the bench.

Losing on penalties is rough enough, but losing on an own goal at the end of the second overtime like Georgetown did to SMU is even worse. Colton Habecker (Douglasville, Pa.) played 21 minutes off the bench for SMU in the match while Sean O’Hearn (Lancaster, Pa.) came off the bench and played 30 minutes for the Hoyas.

Top-ranked Wake Forest advanced on a late penalty kick from Jon Bakero and will face Butler while North Carolina won an in-state clash with UNC Wilmington thanks in part to a goal from Reading United forward Jelani Pieters to earn a visit from SMU and Michigan State and Western Michigan both won to set up an in-state derby and Louisville got by San Francisco to book a date with Colgate at home and Indiana had little trouble with Old Dominion in a 3-0 win to set up a third round match with New Hampshire. Duke and Fordham and Akron and Wisconsin round out the third round match-ups.

-Reading United goalkeeper Ben Lundt made two saves to record a clean sheet in Akron’s 3-0 win over Seattle while Philadelphia Union Academy grad Morgan Hackworth came off the bench and played 29 minutes for the Zips.

–Ben Lundgaard (Greenville, Del.) made four saves but conceded three goals in Virginia Tech’s 3-0 loss to Michigan State.

–Hans Kroschwitz (Piperville, Pa.) started and played 80 minutes in Old Dominion’s 3-0 loss to Indiana.

-Philadelphia Union Academy grad Mark McKenzie (Bear, Del.) started and played 90 minutes in Wake Forest’s 1-0 win over Columbia. Fellow academy grad Joey DeZart came off the bench and played 12 minutes while Justin McMaster played 22 minutes as a sub.

–Matt Miller (Hershey, Pa.) started and played 56 minutes for Fordham in their 1-0 win over Virginia. Philadelphia Union Academy grads Raheem Taylor-Parkes and Jerren Nixon both featured for the Hoos; Taylor-Parkes started and played 42 minutes, Nixon 40 minutes off the bench. Reading United midfielder Pablo Aguilar played 90 minutes and had a shot on goal for Virginia.

-Philadelphia Union Academy grad Patrick Berneski (Warrington, Pa.) played 95 minutes in Notre Dame’s 1-0 loss to Wisconsin.

-Philadelphia Union Academy alum Jack Skahan started and played 90 minutes in North Carolina’s 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington.
