FC Köln Sign Former Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Michael Rensing, Faryd Mondragon Out Of Köln Contract

Bundesliga side FC Köln has signed former Bayern Munich number one goalkeeper Michael Rensing.

The move signals the end of Faryd Mondragon as a Köln player and puts him one step closer to signing with the Philadelphia Union, as has been rumored for the past couple of weeks. Köln's website says that Mondragon's contract will be officially terminated on December 31, leaving him open to sign with any club.

After joining Munich in 2000 from TuS Lingen, Rensing spent time between Munich's Bundesliga II team and the top side between 2003-2007. A few appearances with the Munich first team in both Bundesliga and Champions League led to 17 starts in 2006 and more when Munich and Germany legend Oliver Kahn was injured during the 2007 season. The following season, in 2008, Kahn retired and Rensing was chosen as his replacement. But Rensing was never able to solidify his position as Bayern's first-choice goalkeeper and a bad start to the 2009-2010 season saw him demoted to back up behind Hans-Jörg Butt. Then Munich chose to not retain the 26-year old Rensing during the summer transfer window leading up to the 2010-2011 Bundesliga season.
