Union Offense Sparks to Life in 6-2 Away Rout of Toronto

The Philadelphia Union’s offensive struggles were brought to a decisive end as they romped to a 6-2 away win against Toronto FC at BMO Field. Three goals were scored in the first half alone, more than the Union had scored in any game previously this year.

Midfielder Justin Mapp and forward Danny Mwanga each bagged braces. Gabriel Farfan scored the first goal of the game and Kyle Nakazawa added one as well. Both of Toronto’s goals were scored by Maicon Santos early in the second half.

The Union had been struggling mightily to score goals entering the game, only just recently managing to score 2 goals in the same game against the Chicago Fire last week. But Farfan’s goal in the first minute was enough to set the Union on their way. Toronto entered the second half with renewed motivation despite trailing 3-0 and Santos cut it to 3-2 with two goals. Their optimism was ended though when Mapp scored a goal of the highest quality to make it 4-2. Mwanga’s two late goals sealed the deal.

The win gave the Union sole possession of first place with 20 points from 11 games. They return to the field next week as they travel to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to take on the defending champion Colorado Rapids.
