Game Thread: Union 2 vs Atlanta United 2, Final
The U look to win three in a row, which would be a franchise first.
Game Updates
90+8’ – Union waited until the last 15 minutes to come into the game. However, they were able to come back into the game and level it. Stealing points away from Atlanta.
90+5’ – Union making a sub here with Matt Real coming into the game.
90 +3’ – WHAT A SHOT FROM GLESNES!!!!! Union tie the game.
90’ – Fourth official is signaling there will be 7 minutes.
89’ – Monteiro finally joins the midfield yellow card party as he earns the U’s 5th yellow card.
85’ – Corey Burke finally gets the Union on the board after picking up a second chance shot right in front of the net.
83’ – Atlanta doubles their lead with a nice shot from Walker.
82’ – Atlanta making another sub here.
80’ – Glesnes right footed shot from outside the box goes high
76’ – Glesnes with a solid header of the free kick causing Guzan to make a diving near post save
70’ – Atlanta making their first sub.
69’ – Fontana is getting replaced with the younger 17 year old McGlynn
64’ – A late challenge by Wagner and a United player is on the ground. All eyes are on refree Ted Unkel to see if this will turn into a penalty kick. So far nothing has been changed from the no call. Lopez is sent off and it appears like no foul is being given as Blake lines up for a goal kick.
60’ – Glesnes now enters the ref’s book after a hard tackle near the center circle.
58’ – Atlanta takes a lead after an own goal by Przybylko as he heads it into the up right corner of his own net.
53’ – Atlanta is on the counter here and the Union’s midfield earns another card as Fontana enters the refs book. Three cards for the Union in the match, all to the midfield. Currently Monteiro is the only midfielder without a card.
51’ – Atlanta has a free kick from just about 12 yards beyond the penalty area. The service goes right into the wall. A second chance ball also gets cleared out for a throw-in.
50’ – The broadcast has clarified Heinze’s yellow card. It was for leaving his technical area, something the league is cracking down on. Also the move to bring Burke on was a concussion switch.
46’ – Game resumes. We also have a sub here with Burke coming on for the U. He replaces Santos.
45+6’ – After what looked like could have been a penalty kick, it was called a corner kick. Union delivered it right into a jumping Guzan. After Guzan tries to restart quickly the ref blows for halftime. Teams headed to the locker rooms at 3:05 PM.
45+1’ – We will have 6 minutes of stoppage time here. Also a yellow card was issued to Atlanta’s coach Gabriel Heinze.
43’ – Another great save by Guzan, after Przybylko releases a shot from the top of the box. Guzan did not look pleased at his back line.
41’ – Flach earns a yellow for a smart foul after pushing down an Atlanta forward.
40’ – Play resumes and Fontana is back on the pitch.
38’ – Play is stopped and the medical staff is back on the pitch, this time it is for Fontana who appeared to get hit in the back of the head.
35’ – Union on a counter attack here and they probably spent to much time on the footwork as their two chances to get a ball on frame are blocked. Corner kick is played short of the near post and goes out for a goal kick.
31’ – Union earn a free kick after Santos is back on the ground near the Union’s bench after what looks like Santos’ leg gets caught up with an Atlanta player. He is favoring his knee here. Play is back underway and Santos is next to the fourth official waiting to get waived on.
30’ – Bedoya earns a yellow card for pushing down Atlanta, who was on a great counter attack. Smart move by the captain.
28’ – Union earn a corner kick, the service is sent towards the penalty mark but it is cleared by Atlanta
26’- Santos is up and on the sidelines waiting to come back on. ESPN shows a replay where it looks like he just came down hard on his right side. ATL takes a free kick and sends it on fram but Blake is able to handle it easily. Santos is now back on the pitch.
24’ – Santos is now down on the pitch and the ref has waived on the health staff. He hasn’t really moved much and is just on the ground with pain.
20’ – Play is stopped at Mbaizo is on the ground after throwing his body infront of Atlanta’s shot. He is up after the training staff came out.
17’ – Great width by the Union and a nice idea to switch play from the right side of the pitch to the left. Bedoya dribbles into the penalty area drawing a defender towards him. Fontana shoots the ball and it is SAVED by Guzan.
11’ – Back to back corners for ATL, both of the corners were delivered to the far post and Atlanta was able to get a head on it. Both shots were wide of the net, the first one was last touched by an outstretching Blake. The second one went straight out for a goal kick.
5’ – Good attacking play from United. The attacking front had plenty of space, delivered it behind Glesnes to the chest of a United player who is about 6 yards away from net. However Blake is out to grab the ball.
2’ – Union earn their first corner of the game. Wagner drives it to the near post but it is easily cleared out of danger by Atlanta.
1’ – Vacation is over as the game kicks off in a packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Also Union fans will hear a familiar voice as Danny Higginbotham is in the booth for ESPN today as well. Kickoff happened at 2:13 PM
