Philadelphia Union honors Grant Wahl in press box

Grant Wahl’s memory will continue to live on in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Union announced that it would be reserving a seat for the late journalist in its press box at each game during the 2023 season. The space holds a picture of Wahl, along with flowers and s shift bearing the insignia of Wahl’s podcast, “Fútbol With Grant Wahl.”

Wahl spent many years as a soccer writer for Sports Illustrated, where he pushed the narrative for American soccer. When the Philadelphia Union came into existence, he spent time interviewing the likes of head coach Jim Curtin and former Homegrown Brenden Aaronson in his coverage of Major League Soccer.

Wahl died at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar of an aortic aneurysm. The United State Soccer Federation announced earlier in the year that they would reserve space for Wahl at all men’s and women’s national team games.
