PIAA quarterfinals set for Saturday at neutral sites

Sixteen high school soccer teams from Districts 1 and 12 were left still standing after the first night of the PIAA state tournament on Tuesday.

District 1 girls champions Pennridge fell 3-0 to Central Dauphin in the biggest surprise of the night defending state champions Strath Haven fell to St. Hubert on penalty kicks and Archbishop Wood beat Villa Joseph Marie 5-2. Great Valley, Springfield Township and La Salle College were all knocked out of the Class 4A boys tournament and Lower Merion girls were tripped up in a 3-2 loss to Nazareth in 4A girls. Julie R. Masterman’s boys and girls teams were both knocked out by district 1 opponents in their first round matches.

Downingtown West girls are the lone team left from the area that won a state tournament last year. Delco Christian boys won a state title in 2023.

Three local doubleheaders highlight Saturday’s action with West Chester Henderson and Haverford boys playing back to back at Quakertown Community HS, Harriton boys and CB South girls at Upper Perkiomen and PCL rivals Archbishop Wood and Archbishop Carroll girls both at Owen J. Roberts.

At least one District 1/12 team is guaranteed to get through to Tuesday’s semifinals with District 1 champion Harriton facing Archbishop Ryan from District 12.
