Philadelphia Union Positional Preview: Goalkeepers
As the 2026 campaign gets underway this week, we are taking a deep dive into every player on the Philadelphia Union roster this season. With losses to the attack in Tai Baribo and Mikael Uhre, alongside crucial defensive gaps with the transfers of Jakob Glesnes and Kai Wagner, this season will provide a mix of new faces, different play styles, and (hopefully) a prideful defense of the 2025 Supporters’ Shield under sophomore skipper Bradley Carnell.
We’ll start with the goalkeepers.
Goalkeepers
Andre Blake – Blake returns to the Union for his 13th season with the Boys in Blue. The Jamaican international, and likely captain of the 2026 Philadelphia Union squad without Bedoya in the lineup, capped 325 matches for the squad throughout his tenure. A three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and four-time MLS All Star, Blake will enter the last season of his current contract with the club looking to pick up on a 2025 season filled with ups and downs. Blake posted 9 clean sheets across 25 matches played, only conceding 20 goals across the matches. At 35 years old, Dre will look to continue turning back the clock; however, injuries swept across his 2025 season, making health the greatest concern for the club legend.
Andrew Rick – When looking for a solution to the cracks in Blake’s fitness concerns, Andrew Rick does more than foot the bill. At just 20 years old, Rick continues to impress as a possible successor between the posts for the Union beyond Blake. Phil Wheddon, Philly’s goalkeeper coach since 2020, continues to develop incredible talent from within the youth of the club, and Andrew Rick is no exception. Platooning between both the first and second teams last season, Rick featured in 18 matches for the Union across all first-team competition last season. Posting six clean sheets, Rick will remain the first man off the bench for the Union.
George Marks – Arriving in August of 2025, George Marks remains the third option at goalkeeper for the U. He featured in 5 matches for the Philadelphia Union II last season, and at 26-years-old will likely continue to gather minutes with the second team in MLS Next Pro.
