‘Hometown club’ Hulmeville reaches new heights with state cup win
A Charlie Stewart golazo from 30 yards out delivered Hulmeville SC Mavericks a 1-0 win in a hard fought state cup final on Sunday that won’t soon be forgotten by the team, the club or the small Bucks County borough they call home.
“I’ve been with these girls most of them since they were eight,” head coach Ashley Fischer said after her team won the U-13 NCS State Cup at WSFS Bank Sportsplex. “From a small hometown club for us to be here, it’s just huge, and for the adversity we’ve overcome to get here means more than anyone will ever know.”
The Mavericks were at the state finals last year but fell 3-1 to Penn Fusion Academy in the Presidents Cup.
A year later playing 11v11 on a pristine grass field in the shadow of Subaru Park, the Mavericks had to fend off a strong Vereinigung Erzgebirge team to make Stewart’s goal stand up. It was the kind of match where every corner kick, throw-in, tackle or positive play by either team was cheered as loud as a goal in most other games.
The cheers after Stewart’s winner reverberated around the complex.
“It was off a thrown in and it was deflected and it was bouncing and I just turned on it and hit it as hard as I could and it went upper 90,” Stewart said of the goal. “We promised coach Ashley we were going to get a win and we did it.”
Following a trophy presentation, Ashley posed for photos with the trophy and her two daughters, her older daughter who plays for the Mavericks and younger daughter who also plays for the club.
“I would do anything for any one of these girls,” Fischer said. “All 18 of them are my extended daughters. I’m so incredibly proud of them.”
The state cup win – a first for the club since the Demons won the state Presidents Cup in 2024 – also booked a spot in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, being held this year for the girls in Murfreesboro and Smyrna, Tennessee from July 16-23.
The Hulmeville Demons, which came up short in their U-15 boys NCS state cup final on Saturday, were the last Hulmeville team to advance to a national championship when they reached the National Presidents Cup in 2024. Hulmeville Dortmund reached the U19 boys National Presidents Cup in 2023.
