Philadelphia Union release retro ‘Philly Kit’ third jersey
The Philadelphia Union’s third jersey was officially unveiled earlier this week as part of the latest release of the MLS Archive Collection.
The ‘Philly Kit’ pays homage to the ’90s Philadelphia sports scene, an iconic time period of fandom for the city’s big four sports teams – the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers.
“Philadelphia is unlike any other sports city in America,” Amanda Young Curtis, SVP Marketing and Communications, Philadelphia Union, said in a news release. “The passion, pride, and loyalty of its fans have shaped one of the most recognizable sports cultures in the world, and this kit is a tribute to that legacy. It reflects the deep connection between this city and its teams while recognizing the generations of Philadelphians who have defined what it means to be a sports fan.”
Jersey reactions are typically mixed and follow a pattern of immediate reactions to leaks and further analysis once the full jersey is available. The Bimbo commentary – less of an issue since the bakery company first became a jersey sponsor well over a decade ago – is upped here with the placement of the sponsor logo on the lower back.
Other details include a period skyline and bold PHILLY letters on the front of the jersey, a reimagined throwback MLS logo, the Union’s snake patch, and the Liberty Bell featuring an intertwined snake cutout.
