USOC Game 1: Philadelphia Union 1 – New York Red Bulls 2 (and LeToux is injured)

Published

on

The Union lost their first game of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Red Bull Arena tonight. New York played a thin roster made up almost entirely of their bench warmers against a Union lineup that I would say was at 40%. Philadelphia was down 0-2 at half and brought in a few starters to try to get something going about 10 minutes into the second half. LeToux came on and scored minutes later making it 1-2 where the score would remain until the whistle.

The bigger story: Sebastian LeToux was carried off on a stretcher. No details have emerged just yet but to quote the Union twitter account:

Le Toux was carried off the field on a stretcher minutes ago. Didn’t look good.

Ugh. A loss we can move on from but an injury to your top goal scorer in a non-league game is devastating.

Overall the Union played poorly. Many unforced errors and mistakes were made. Shoddy passing and clumsy ball handling led to a disjointed side that couldn’t find rhythm. LeToux and Moreno brought a spark as they should against New York’s second team. I’d rather not expound on it much more than that. It was a bad game. LeToux’s injury made it a terrible one.
