Andre Blake nominated for Save of the Week

It’s that time of week where the Philadelphia Union goalkeeper picks up another nomination for a phenomenal save.

Andre Blake is at it again. The Philadelphia Union goalkeeper earned another MLS Save of the Week nomination this week – his third in a row and eleventh this season. This week’s mind-bending save was this effort to turn a Sebastian Giovinco free kick wide.

Blake and the Union ultimately succumbed to Toronto FC 3-1, however the goals were more a result of bad defending than miscues by Blake.

Blake is currently up against Portland Timbers’ goalkeeper Jake Gleeson for this save during Portland’s 3-1 Cascadia Derby loss to the Seattle Sounders.

Last week, Blake made it to the semifinals of the Save of the Week contest before being bested by Seattle’s Stefan Frei. The last time he won was way back in Week 16. Make no mistake, this is a popularity contest plain and simple. He who gets the most votes wins, and the fans that vote see their goalkeeper get the award (it’s why Orlando City’s Joe Bendik has won eight of the twenty-three previous contests).
