MLS source: ‘There will be an Expansion Draft.’
Brotherly Game has learned that the MLS Expansion Draft will continue in 2016.
The 2016 MLS Regular Season is rapidly coming to a close, and the playoffs loom large. And while most teams are (rightfully so) focusing on the postseason, a few are paying closer attention to what is happening after the season ends.
There have been quite a few discussions around whether or not there would be an Expansion Draft with Minnesota United FC and Atlanta United entering the league, with a Yahoo! Sports report stating that"Discussion of eliminating the expansion draft has taken place at the committee level within MLS" with the alternative to the Expansion Draft being that "[The] league would probably expand [the] number of foreign slots and increase allocation money for expansion teams,"
It appears though that this will not be the case. A source in MLS tells Brotherly Game that:
This is likely good news for Both Minnesota and Atlanta, as the reported Draft replacement would have opened up a whole bunch of new questions such as how long would the clubs keep the additional foreign roster slots and increased allocation money, whether these would be tradeable assets or if they would stay with the player(s) they were being used on.
