Saint Joseph’s improves to 2-0 in conference play; Penn and Delaware tie

A strong second half propelled Saint Joseph’s to a comeback win over Rhode Island on Wednesday night thanks to a pair of goals and an assist from junior midfielder Matt Crawford.

Crawford (Bensalem, Pa.) found an equalizer in the 48th minute and then assisted on a Derek MacKinnon (Washington Township, N.J.) goal six minutes later that held up as the game-winner. Crawford added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, his seventh of the season.

With the win, Saint Joseph’s evened their record at 5-5-1 and improved to 2-0-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play for the first time since 2007. Goalkeeper Greg O’Connell made four saves in net for the Hawks, all after conceding an 18th minute goal by Carlo Davids off an assist from Dante Lamb.

Crawford, who has scored all but three of the team’s goals this season, is the first Hawks player to score at least seven goals in a season since 2007 when Colin Baker had eight.

Penn and Delaware play to 2-2 draw

Penn tied a school record set in 1985 for draws in a season with a 2-2 tie against visit Delaware at Rhodes Field on Wednesday night.

The Quakers (3-1-5) struck first in the 26th minute with a rocket from junior Sam Wancowicz, but senior Guillermo Delgado responded with a pair of goals to make it 2-1 going into the locker room. Delgado’s goals give him eight on the season and 45 in his career to draw within two of Mike Biggs’ 46-year-old program record.

Matt Poplawski found an equalizer for the home team off a Gavin Barger corner kick in the 52nd minute that gave way to 58 minutes of scoreless soccer in the Quakers seventh overtime game of the year.

The Blue Hens improved to 8-3-1 on the season with the draw.

Lehigh, Lafayette and Princeton win; Rider edged by Monmouth

Oscar Greene scored the golden goal in the 96th minute to lead Lehigh to a comeback win over Navy on Wednesday night.

Navy took the lead in the first half on a Thomas Moore goal, but the Mountain Hawks (4-6-1) found an equalizer from Zarin Tuten in the 55th minute to send the game to overtime and set up Greene’s heroics.

Will Smith (Devon, Pa.) made five saves in net for Lehigh, which picked up their first Patriot League win of the season and Philadelphia Union Academy grad Doyle Tuvesson recorded an assist on the game-winner.

Evan Vare didn’t score, but he helped set up Christian Moyse’s late winner in a 1-0 win over Bucknell.

With the win, Lafayette improved to 6-5-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in Patriot League play.

Princeton (5-3-1) scored three second half goals to overcome a one-goal deficit and beat Seton Hall on the road Wednesday.

Greg Seifert had a second half brace and added an assist on Will Lentz’s insurance goal in the 85th minute.

Daniel Figarella scored in the 88th minute to give Monmouth a 1-0 win over Rider in a critical Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.

The Broncs fell to 6-3-1 and 1-1-1 in conference play with the loss.
