Matthew Freese called up to United States U19 camp

Philadelphia Union Academy goalkeeper Matthew Freese has caught the eye of a U.S. goalkeeping legend.

Freese was called up by United States U19 head coach Brad Friedel for a domestic training camp being held in Sunrise, Florida through February 10.

The Harvard University commit is one of three players from the region at the camp. West Bromwich Albion defender Daniel Barbir (Allentown, Pa.) and UCLA goalkeeper Kevin Silva (Bethlehem, Pa.) are also at the camp.

Freese joined the Union Academy last summer, but has only made one appearance for the Union U18s since he opted to play his senior season at Episcopal Academy. He spent time training with the first team last week and would likely still be in camp with them if not for the call-up.

The U19s are scheduled to play El Salvador and Miami FC during the camp, the first of the calendar year for the group.

“I'm really looking forward to the camp and I think we've assembled a good, athletic squad and I will be really interested to see who does well,” Friedel said in a news release. “This camp is meant to bring in new and returning players and give them the opportunity to get into the system and have a chance at making a future U-20 roster. The second part of that is, the (birth year) 1997, 1998 and some 1999 age groups are going to make up the bulk of the next U-23 Olympic team. So it’s really important that we continue to give the players international experience.”
