U.S. Open Cup darlings Christos FC coming to Philly area for amateur cup regionals this weekend

Christos FC, the amateur club headquartered at a discount liquor store that captured the soccer world with its improbable run to a fourth round match with D.C. United may be out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

But they’ll have two chances this Sunday in Horsham, Pa. to continue their quest for additional hardware when they play in a pair of regional finals for two national amateur cups.

Ukrainian American Sports Center will play host to three Region 1 cup finals over the weekend. Junior Lone Star FC plays Landsowne Bhoys on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Christos FC has two games on Sunday, the first for the Region 1 final of the Mengel Cup at 11 a.m. against Danbury United and the second at 1 p.m. against Landsdowne Bhoys in the Region 1 Werner Fricker Cup.

The winners of the Mengel and Fricker cups will earn a spot in the finals in Detroit, Mich. the weekend of August 19 and 20. The four regional USASA National Amateur Cup winners will meet in August 4 and 5 at a location to be announced.

Christos FC won both the USASA National Amateur Cup and Werner Fricker Cup last year.

Former Reading United forward and 2011 Philadelphia Union draft pick Levi Houapeu is part of Christos FC’s squad of ex-professionals and former Division 1 college standouts.

The Region 1 U23 Cup final will also be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday, following a 10 a.m. semifinal and the end of group play on Saturday. Local teams in the competition include West Chester United, Trenton Rebels, Junior Lone Star, Philadelphia SC and United German Hungarians.
