Conestoga, Camp Hill, Lower Dauphin & Salesianum repeat as high school state champions

Three eastern Pennsylvania high schools repeated as state champions at Hersheypark Stadium over the weekend while Salesianum School continued its dominance in Delaware.

Drexel commit and FC Montco standout Chris Donovan powered Conestoga to their second straight Class 4A championship on Friday night with all four goals in a 4-0 win over Hempfield. The win completed an unbeaten 25-0-1 season for the Pioneers and a No. 3 finish in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Fab 50 rankings while Donovan finished out his high school career with 56 goals.

UMBC commit Jackson Becher had a brace and Ryan Becher and Blake Cassel added goals to lead Lower Dauphin to a 4-1 win in the Class 3A final on Saturday in a rematch of the 2016 final against Northwestern Lehigh. The Falcons finished the season 26-2-1 after posting a 28-0-0 record in 2016 and came in 21st in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Fab 50 rankings.

In the Class A final, Camp Hill blew a two-goal lead but won 3-2 over North Catholic on an 85th minute goal from Dylan Mayanja to captured their second straight state title.

Salesianum edged Appoquinimink 2-1 to capture the school’s eighth straight state title in the Delaware Division 1 final on Saturday. Bryce Wallace led the Sallies with a brace, putting his team back in the lead for good in the 60th minute after Appo tied things up five minutes later off an Anthony Dina free kick that was deflected into the goal.

The Sallies finished the season 17-1-0 to finish 13th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Fab 50 rankings. Caravel Academy topped Indian River 2-0 to capture the Division II state title on Saturday.

South Jersey came away empty handed in the state finals in New Jersey on Sunday.

Playing in the school’s first state final since 1969, Glassboro conceded a golden goal in overtime to lose 3-2 in Pompton Lakes in the Group 1 final. The game-winner came after a controversial call of a handball on the Glassboro goalkeeper just outside the penalty box gave Pompton Lakes a dangerous free kick they were able to convert.

Glassboro’s Sinan Tuzcu had a goal and an assist in the match to finish with 31 goals for the season and 60 for his career. Luke Archibald had the other goal for the Bulldogs, which finished the season with a 19-3-3 record.
