Union waive third-string ‘keeper Perk

From the Union:

CHESTER, Pa. (July 30, 2010) – Philadelphia Union announced today that the club has waived goalkeeper Brian Perk. The 21-year-old was drafted on January 14, 2010 through the MLS SuperDraft as the Union’s sixth pick, 49th overall.

During his time with the Union, Perk earned two appearances with the expansion club in international friendlies, against Scottish Premier League side Celtic FC on July 14 and English Premier League side Manchester United on July 21.

By all accounts, Perk was excellent in his limited playing time, especially against Celtic, so this comes as a bit of a surprise. Of course, neither he nor Brad Knighton have appeared in a single minute of MLS play, and with the Union perhaps getting a bit too close to the salary cap for comfort with the recent signing of Chacho Coudet and acquisition of Justin Mapp, this may simply be a salary dump in order to make room for a future move.
