DCU Trade With San Jose Gives Brandon McDonald And Faryd Mondragon Two More Times To Get Acquainted

Published

on

The San Jose Earthquakes and Philadelphia Union played a game full of controversial cards, including a red card to Union left back Jordan Harvey, back on April 30. Despite going down a man, the Union managed to eek out a 1-0 win on the back of Amobi Okugo’s penalty draw and Sebastien Le Toux‘s successful penalty kick conversion.

It was, however, Faryd Mondragon who received the most interesting caution: an unsporting behavior yellow card late in the first half. The Colombian goalkeeper got into a tiff with then San Jose defender Brandon McDonald over Mondragon’s 50/50 challenge with Earthquakes star Chris Wondoloski inside the Philadelphia box. The two players went out one another, with Mondragon dwarfing McDonald during the argument.

The Union were set to play San Jose again next week, on July 9, which would have set up another meeting between Mondragon and McDonald. Instead the two will potentially face off once again tonight. McDonald joins a DC United team, through a trade that sent allocation money to the Earthquakes, that shipped off midfielder Dax McCarty to the New York Red Bulls for attacking midfielder Dwayne DeRosario.
