Report: Union Sign Gabriel Farfan

Published

on

Soccer By Ives is reporting that the Philadelphia Union have signed Gabriel Farfan to a contract.

Farfan, the twin brother of the Union's 2011 second round selection Michael Farfan, played at the University of Cal State Fullerton. He moved to Mexican soccer giants Club America for almost two years before leaving after progressing from the team's reserve squad.

The Union have used Farfan at left back during the preseason, according to identifications by Union fans at the team's games in Florida. Ives says that the 23-year-old Farfan "is expected to push incumbent left back Jordan Harvey for the starting role."

Head coach Piotr Nowak hinted to the signings of two defenders to bolster the Union's lack of depth at key positions. With only five defenders currently on their roster, the Union have reportedly been playing midfielders at defensive positions, including defensive midfielder Amobi Okugo at center back and Supplemental Draft pick midfielder Ryan Richter at right back.
