Jack McInerney Included On USMNT Gold Cup Roster
Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl tweeted out that the young striker had made the squad.
Jack McInerney will get his chance with the senior national team.
United States Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann selected McInerney to join the country's Gold Cup squad, according to a tweet by Grant Wahl, of Sports Illustrated. The USMNT will play Belize, Cuba and Costa Rica in group play, between July 9-16.
The Philadelphia Union striker has been lethal in front of the goal this season, scoring 10 times in 16 regular season games (15 starts) in 2013. McInerney has accounted for over one third of the Union's goals so far this year.
McInerney has already said that he’ll play in Saturday’s game at PPL Park versus FC Dallas before departing to join the USMNT for the Gold Cup. The 20-year-old is expected to miss around five matches, including an encounter with Real Salt Lake after the Dallas home game.
To replace McInerney in the starting lineup, the Union will rely on some mixture of Conor Casey, Sebastien Le Toux, Antoine Hoppenot and Aaron Wheeler. Casey and Le Toux have been a part of the starting lineup for most of this year, while Hoppenot has typically played the role of super sub and Wheeler has seen the bench.
Philadelphia obtained sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference after defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-0 on Sunday.
