Rayshaun McGann wins trophy with U.S. U-15 team
The Union Academy defender started two games in successful campaign for U.S. Under-15 team in European tournament.
Union Academy defender Rayshaun McGann and former Philadelphia Union coach John Hackworth captured hardware on Friday in Italy as the U.S. Under-15 boys national team beat Austria 3-2 to win the Tournament delle Nazioni.
McGann started and played 12 minutes in the U.S. team's second match in Slovenia, a 3-2 loss to the hosts, and went the distance in a 6-2 win over Croatia that put the U.S. into the semifinals.
He was an unused sub in a 0-0 draw with Italy in the semifinal that saw the U.S. advanced 5-4 on penalties. McGann didn't play in Friday's final.
The international tournament was the third this year for McGann, who has traveled to the Netherlands and Turkey with the U.S. U-15s and played up with the Union Academy U-16 in the Generation Adidas Cup in Dallas.
The 15-year-old defender joined the Academy last fall after spending the 2013-14 season with Boca United Football Club's U-13/14 team in his native Florida, the same club Union U-18 forward Sebastian Elney played with before joining the Union Academy. Prior to that, McGann played with the Wellington Wave Soccer Club in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
He's appeared in 10 games, starting eight in U.S. Development Academy play for the U-14 team this season. He's made two starts for the U-16 team.
