The Philadelphia Union have announced the loan signing of 25-year-old midfielder Jamiro Monteiro from FC Metz. The loan runs through June, and the deal includes options to extend the loan and make it permanent. Targeted Allocation Money was used to complete the transaction.

The midfielder joined Ligue 2’s Metz this summer, but he has only made three league appearances in his time there. He got his start in the Netherlands, where he led SC Cambuur to promotion before moving to the Eredivisie’s Heracles ahead of the 2017-18 season. Monteiro made 34 appearances, 30 of them starts, and scored four goals for Heracles, enough to earn a reported $3.4m move to Metz, per Transfermarkt.

Monteiro was born in Rotterdam to a Cape Verdean, and has represented Cape Verde five times on the international stage, most recently in July of 2017.

Jim Curtin and Ernst Tanner spoke highly of Monteiro’s box-to-box qualities. He’ll likely line up on the left side of the Union’s new diamond midfield, though he’ll also have considerable defensive responsibility given Haris Medunjanin’s struggles without the ball.
