Union sign German midfielder Kevin Kratz

The Philadelphia Union have signed German midfielder Kevin Kratz ahead of today’s MLS Roster Freeze Date. Though the transfer window closed in August, MLS clubs are still able to sign free agents up until the roster freeze.

Kratz, 29, came up through Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen's system, but he's spent most of his time in the lower leagues of Germany. Kratz was part of the Eintracht Braunschweig squad that won promotion to the Bundesliga in 2013. After the club's unsuccessful relegation battle the next season, Kratz left for SV Sandhausen of the 2. Bundesliga.

"Kevin provides us valuable depth in multiple positions across our midfield," said Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart in a release from the club. "His experience and mentality are a good addition to our group."

Kratz's highlight tape, which was produced by his agent, focuses mostly on his playmaking. For what it's worth, transfermarkt.com says that he can also play as a central and defensive midfielder in addition to the #10, his best position. Given the Union's incredibly crowded midfield, it's anyone's guess where (and if) he actually plays.

Kratz’s agent, Justin Stone of Stone Sports Management, also manages the Union’s Roland Alberg and Anderson Conceicao, and former Bethlehem Steel goalkeeper Samir Badr.
