Cory Burke left off Jamaica’s provisional Gold Cup roster
Andre Blake, Marco Fabián and Warren Creavalle were the only Union players included on provisional Gold Cup rosters. Bethlehem Steel defender Jamoi Topey is also on Jamaica roster.
Cory Burke will not be part of Jamaica’s Gold Cup team after being left off the provisional roster for the competition announced by CONCACAF on Monday.
Burke has been unavailable to play for the Philadelphia Union for the last five games and is expected to miss at least three months because of work-visa issues.
Few details have emerged since Sporting Director Ernst Tanner made the visa situation public earlier this month. Undisclosed personal reasons were cited as the the reason his visa was canceled but Tanner said it was not the result of anything criminal.
The team paid tribute to their teammate — who is still under contract but not on the active roster — in the celebration of their first goal against New England Revolution on May 4 and Burke has posted a message about his love for the team on Instagram.
It remains unclear whether Burke’s visa complications are the reason he hasn’t been included in Jamaica’s 40-man provisional roster but his absence means Andre Blake is the lone Union player on the Reggae Boyz provisional roster, which does include 19-year-old Bethlehem Steel FC defender Jamoi Topey.
Just two other first team players made provisional rosters: Marco Fabián (Mexico) and Warren Creavalle (Guyana).
The U.S. roster does not include any Union players but does include four with ties to the area, including goalkeepers Tyler Miller and Zack Steffen, defender Daniel Lovitz and midfielder Christian Pulisic.
The final 23-player rosters will be announced the first week of June.
