The College of New Jersey announced in a letter to students on Friday that men’s and women’s soccer and other fall sports will be canceled for the fall due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus.

“These were not easy decisions for the college to make, but the health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority,” Amanda DeMartino, TCNJ Executive Director of Athletics, wrote in the letter. “I know how disappointing this news is for our student-athletes, coaches and staff, especially our seniors. We will continue our work to determine the next steps for TCNJ Athletics and find the best way to move forward through these challenging times.”

Sports considered “high risk” and “high density” like football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, wrestling and men’s and women’s basketball were part of the cancelation.

“Athletics are an important part of the campus experience, but the risk is too high and the consequences too great with the allowance of high-risk athletics activities,” the letter stated.

Both women’s and men’s soccer teams had winning records last season. The women’s team finished with a 17-2-1 record, won the program’s third straight NJAC Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The men’s team posted a 10-4-4 record.

Lehigh Carbon Community College announced the cancelation of men’s and women’s soccer and all other sports for the 2020-2021 academic year in early June.
