Former Philadelphia Union Academy and Philadelphia Union II midfielder Danny Flores was claimed off waivers and signed to an MLS contract with Sporting Kansas City for the 2023 season with options for 2024, 2025 and 2026, the team announced on Friday.

Flores spent the last two seasons at Virginia Tech after playing with the Oakland Roots in the USL Championship and two seasons with the Philadelphia Union II. He joins Union Academy teammate Ben Martino in leaving Virginia Tech early to sign with MLS club.

Unlike Martino, the Union aren’t receiving any compensation for Flores’s homegrown rights since he was claimed off waivers.

The 20-year-old from Half Moon Bay, Calif. joined the Union Academy from Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Minnesota in August 2018. He graduated from YSC Academy in 2020.
