Dawson McCartney, a Philadelphia Union Academy grad from Voorhees, N.J., has joined Birmingham Legion FC for the 2024 USL Championship season after a two-year stint in MLS Next Pro with Portland Timbers 2.

The 25-year-old was drafted in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by the Portland Timbers with the 43rd overall pick after finishing his college career at Notre Dame. He started college at Dartmouth after graduating from YSC Academy and playing in the USL Championship with Bethlehem Steel FC.

“We are extremely excited to have Dawson sign with Legion FC,” Legion President and General Manager Jay Heaps said in a news release. “He is a left-sided player, very technical, and has a great work rate.”

The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Birmingham opens their season at defending champions Phoenix Rising on March 9 and he’ll visit former Steel head coach Brendan Burke and Hartford Athletic on March 23.
