Philadelphia native CJ dos Santos has made the most of his first season as a starting goalkeeper in MLS, leading San Diego FC to an impressive showing in their inaugural season.

The 24-year-old’s efforts have been rewarded with a new contract that will keep him with the club through the 2027 season with a club option through 2028.

“CJ has been an important presence for us on the field and in the locker room this season,” San Diego’s Sporting Director Tyler Heaps said in a news release. “He’s proving that he can be a starter in this league and can impact the game in and out of possession as he continues to grow and develop as a goalkeeper. We’re excited to sign him to a new contract and look forward to his continued contributions as a core part of our roster.”

Dos Santos, who left the U.S. and the Philadelphia Union Academy as a teenager to begin his professional career with Benfica in Portugal, was acquired by the expansion side in the offseason from Inter Miami for $100,000 in general allocation money. He recorded a clean sheet in the club’s first ever match, a 2-0 win over LA Galaxy and has six clean sheets in 16 starts this season.
