Top seeds fall as DIAA Division II Girls Soccer Tournament delivers quarterfinal chaos
The road to the DIAA Division II Girls Soccer State Championship took a dramatic turn Saturday as both top seeds were eliminated, leaving an unexpected quartet of teams standing just one win away from a trip to the state final.
The biggest shockwaves came from No. 10 Archmere Academy and No. 9 Sanford School, who each knocked off higher-seeded opponents to continue their postseason runs and reshape the tournament bracket.
Archmere produced perhaps the day’s most significant result, upsetting No. 2 Caravel Academy 1-0. The loss not only ends Caravel’s season but also extinguishes the Buccaneers’ pursuit of a third consecutive state championship. After capturing the previous two Division II crowns, Caravel entered the tournament as one of the favorites to reach Dover once again. Instead, Archmere’s defensive effort and timely finish ensured there will be a new champion crowned in 2026.
Meanwhile, Sanford traveled south and earned a 2-0 victory over Indian River, another result that few would have predicted when the bracket was announced. The Warriors’ disciplined performance on the road secured the program a place in the state semifinals and continued an impressive late-season surge.
While the upsets grabbed headlines, No. 5 Wilmington Friends School survived the day’s most entertaining contest. The Quakers outlasted No. 4 Ursuline Academy in a nine-goal thriller, prevailing 5-4 in a match that showcased attacking quality from both sides. Wilmington Friends now finds itself just one victory away from a championship appearance.
No. 3 St. Mark’s High School was the lone higher seed to advance comfortably, defeating No. 11 Wilmington Christian School 4-0. The Spartans continued the form that has made them one of the tournament’s most consistent teams and now enter the semifinals as the highest remaining seed.
The semifinal matchups are set for Wednesday in Dover. Wilmington Friends will take on Sanford in a battle of teams that have already proven capable of upsetting expectations. On the other side of the bracket, Archmere will look to add another chapter to its Cinderella run when it faces St. Mark’s for a spot in the state championship game.
What appeared to be a straightforward path for the tournament favorites has been completely rewritten. With the top two seeds out and a reigning champion sent home, the Division II title race is now wide open. Four teams remain, but only two will leave Dover with a chance to play for a state championship.
