USWNT return to Philadelphia to face No. 1-ranked Spain
The U.S. Women’s National Team announced that they will return to Philadelphia in October to face off against Spain, the defending Women’s World Cup champions. The match will take place on October 13th at Subaru Park.
U.S. Soccer announced the plans for USWNT’s October window on Monday. USWNT will first face Spain on October 10 th at Washington, D.C.’s Audi Field before facing La Roja again in Philadelphia three days later. The USWNT return to Philadelphia just under a year since their last trip, a 2-1 loss to Portugal on October 23 rd , 2025. The upcoming matches against Spain will be the first action for USWNT for over four months after a set of friendlies against Brazil in June.
The matches between the two top-ranked national teams in the world will be some of the most anticipated friendlies in recent history, and Philadelphia will be at the epicenter of the action. Head coach Emma Hayes spoke about the upcoming matches. “We’ve desperately wanted to get Spain on our schedule, but the difficulties of scheduling the top teams during the women’s international calendar are well known, so to be able to get these two games on the East Coast will be the perfect tests before we head into World Cup qualifying at the end of the year.”
Due to the challenges with scheduling Hayes mentioned, USWNT have only faced Spain four times before. USWNT won the first three matches, including once in the 2019 Women’s World Cup Round of 16 and again a year later in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. Spain picked up their first-ever win over the USWNT in a friendly held in Spain in 2022. La Roja went on to win the 2023 Women’s World Cup the year after.
The USWNT’s match at Subaru Park will be their tenth time playing in Chester. After winning in their first nine matches on the banks of the Delaware River, the 2-1 loss to Portugal in October marked their first loss in Chester.
The chance to see the two highest-ranked national teams in the world will be quite the treat for Philadelphia. Still, due to USWNT’s sustained success, this type of heavyweight bout is not new to them. The two matches against Spain will be the 18th and 19th occasion that USWNT has played a match between the two top-ranked teams in the world. USWNT are undefeated in these matches, winning eleven times and earning a draw six times.
