Colonial SC kicks off USLPA spring with win over Westtown FC
Four different goal scorers found the back of the net in the first half for Colonial SC and they were able to hold off a surge from Westtown FC in the second half to kick off their spring with a 4-2 win in United Soccer League of PA league play on Sunday afternoon.
AJ Bishop, Steven Hutchinson, John Underwood and Cole DeVaul scored for the hosts as they picked up their second win of the season to improve to 2-2-2 in the Mens Major division.
The match was a rematch from earlier this month when Westtown beat Colonial 3-2 in EPSA Open Cup play.
“We didn’t have a great fall and we lost to them a couple weeks ago in cup play so it was definitely very important to get a win today,” said player/coach Christian Knittel. “I think we still have a lot of growing pains to get to where we want to be but right now it’s just building on the performance and getting results.”
Corron Hovington had a free kick goal to bring the visitors back into the match in the second half but a second yellow shown for dissent put the league newcomers down a man as they tried to find a way back into the game. They did well and had some chances denied on the doorstep to make things interesting.
“They honestly were controlling a lot of the game and had the chances, which is not great for us when we’re up a man,” Knittel said. “I don’t like seeing that, but they did really well.”
Westtown is still seeking their first win but is showing improvement as they better acquaint themselves with the competition in the league. Vereinigung Erzgebirge is one point of clear of West Chester United in first place but there’s plenty still to play for this spring. VE and West Chester United will meet Sunday in the final of the EPSA Open Cup while Westtown FC visits Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals and Colonial has a couple weeks off before hosting Ukrainian Nationals on April 12.
