Union dominate Red Bull, extend unbeaten streak
The Philadelphia Union thrashed rivals Red Bull New York on Saturday night, taking the match 3-1 behind goals from Milan Iloski, Cavan Sullivan, and Neil Pierre. The win continued an unbeaten run in MLS under Ryan Richter, marking the 7th straight contest without defeat since the World Cup break.
The Union took the lead on Red Bull early when Milan Iloski turned home from Indiana Vassilev’s shot attempt. Iloski’s 11th goal of the season was his 10th goal contribution in his last 9 MLS matches. The lead was doubled early in the second half, when phenom Cavan Sullivan took over. After receiving a long switch from Danley Jean Jacques, he drove at his defender before
cutting inside and finishing decisively to extend the Union lead to 2-0. Sullivan has found form as of late, scoring in back-to-back matches and earning his 6th goal contribution across his last 5 matches in all competitions. Neil Pierre claimed the third goal for the Union soon after, sliding to tap home a cross that was flicked on by Bruno Damiani.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added a late consolation for the Red Bulls, but the match ended 3-1 in favor of the Union in a near-perfect night for Philadelphia. 5 wins and 2 draws across the last 7 matches under Ryan Richter is good for 17 points, more than double the 7 points accrued over the Union’s first 15 matches. Currently sitting on 24 points, the Union are suddenly knocking on the door of the playoff line, only one point behind Orlando City in the 9 th place play-in spot and 4 points behind NYCFC in 7th.
The Union return home on Saturday to host CF Montréal at Subaru Park. Looking to continue a red-hot streak, a win could propel the Union into a playoff position.
