Villanova falls in OT; Gomez Sanchez leads Temple back to win column

Reigning National Player of the Week David Goldsmith was too much for Villanova on Parents’ Day, as the visitors from Butler took all three points with a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday afternoon.

Goldsmith, a senior from Bristol, England who scored four goals last week, opened the scoring in the 18th minute for the Bulldogs and added his sixth of the season with four minutes left in the first overtime for his second game-winner of the year.

Philadelphia Union Academy grad Zach Zandi leveled the score just after halftime when he caught the Butler goalkeeper off guard and converted a penalty kick before he was set. The goalkeeper, Eric Dick, was whistled for the foul just inside the 18 when he collided with John Jlopleh.

The goal was the second of Zandi’s career, and his first attempt from the penalty spot.

Butler (5-0-1) regained the lead off a Marco Charalambous rocket just seven minutes later but Lucas Hodges put things on level terms again when Miguel Polley set him up for his third goal of the season in the 72nd minute.

Nova keeper Will Steiner made five saves on the day in the losing effort. The loss snapped a three game winning streak and a two-game winning streak over ranked opponents for the Wildcats (3-3-0).

Gomez Sanchez gets the Owls back on track

After back-to-back defeats on the road, Temple returned to the win column with a 4-0 rout over Fairfield thanks to a hat trick from senior Jorge Gomez Sanchez at Temple Sports Complex on Saturday.

Gomez Sanchez opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added a pair of goals two minutes apart in the second half to complete his second career hat trick. The senior from Spain now has nine goals on the season and 22 in two seasons with the Owls (5-2-0).

Joonas Jokinen added a goal and an assist and Alex Cagle only needed to make one save to record his third clean sheet of the season.

Delaware beat William & Mary in overtime

Guillermo Delgado set a new program record for points with a 66th minute equalizer and Jaime Martinez scored a golden goal in overtime to lift the Blue Hens (6-1-0) to victory on Saturday night.

Delgado’s goal was the 43rd of his career, just four shy of Mike Biggs, whose 99-point scoring mark the senior from Spain tied last week.

Reilly Maw gave the Tribe the lead just after halftime with an unassisted goal. Martinez assisted Delgado’s equalizer and Robert Gillin, of Marlton, N.J., picked up the assist on Martinez’s game-winner.

Penn picks up first win over La Salle; St. Joseph’s loses

Sam Hefter scored in overtime to give Penn their first win of the season over Philadelphia Soccer Six rivals La Salle on Saturday night.

Two minutes away from playing to a scoreless draw, Sam Wancowicz sent a cross in from the right flank to Hefter, who beat goalkeeper Mike Kirk on a night the fifth-year keeper had already collected 10 saves.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Explorers (5-2-0) and was the first for the Quakers (1-1-3) since November 13, 2015.

Ericson Bean scored in the 34th minute to lead Navy to a 1-0 win over St. Joseph’s in a tune-up for Friday’s Army-Navy Cup at Talen Energy Stadium.

Hawks goalkeeper Greg O’Connell made four saves in the losing effort. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Hawks (2-4-0).

Lafayette wins second straight; Lehigh falls to Robert Morris

Evan Vare scored his third goal in two games and Lafayette (2-4-0) picked up their second straight win with a 2-0 victory over Yale on Saturday.

Lehigh fell short in their comeback attempt after surrendering a pair of goals to Robert Morris. Kevin Klingenberg pulled back a goal for the Mountain Hawks (2-4-0) in the 64th minute after Jake Cooper and Rafael Bruzual put the Colonials up 2-0, but that was as close as the game would get.

In Friday action, Princeton (2-2-0) won their second straight on a Benjamin Martin goal in the 56th minute to top Boston. Martin also assisted on Vikram Pothuri’s 35th minute strike.
