Sporting Kansas City sign former Philadelphia Union youth Colton Storm

Another former Philadelphia Union youth drafted last month has signed on with a club in Major League Soccer.

Defender Colton Storm, of Mechanicsburg, was drafted by Sporting Kansas City with the 14th overall pick out of the University of North Carolina. He’s appeared in two preseason matches with the club in Arizona, logging 75 minutes.

“I am very excited to sign my first professional contract with Sporting KC," Storm said in a news release. "Since the moment I got here, the players and staff have welcomed me with open arms. I look forward to continuing my progression as a player with the club and playing in front of the great fans at Children's Mercy Park."

A right back, Storm had two goals and eight assists in 69 games over his four-year career in Chapel Hill. He also played in the Premier Development League for Reading United A.C. and most recently with Portland Timbers U23.

Prior to that, he spent time with the U.S. U17 Residency Program in Florida, made four appearances for the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Reserve League and played club soccer for HMMS Eagle FC. He also suited up for the Union in the 2011 Generation adidas Cup.

Like Connor Maloney, who signed with Columbus Crew earlier this week, the 22-year-old was part of the Union youth setup prior to joining the U.S. Soccer Development Academy in 2013-14. Columbus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen and Union defender Keegan Rosenberry were also part of the same youth setup with the Union as members of local club affiliates.
