Houston Dynamo draft pick training with the Philadelphia Union

Still in search of a third goalkeeper, the Philadelphia Union have reportedly brought former University of Tulsa goalkeeper Jake McGuire into training camp.

The 22-year-old from Chino Hills, California was drafted in January by the Houston Dynamo with the 30th overall pick. But with three other goalkeepers on the roster – Tyler Deric, Calle Brown and Joe Willis – there doesn’t appear to be room for the unsigned rookie in Houston.

McGuire made the second team American Athletic Conference in his senior season while playing all 1,905 minutes and registering six clean sheets for the Golden Hurricane. He had 17 career shutouts, most in school history. He played in the Premier Development for Portland Timbers U23 last summer.

McGuire isn’t the first goalkeeper to train with the Union this preseason. Indy Eleven goalkeeper Keith Cardona spent some time training with the club in Florida and started in a closed door scrimmage against D.C. United.

Philadelphia Union Academy goalkeepers Tomas Romero and Kristopher Shakes have also spent time with the club in Florida.

Should the Union look to offer McGuire a contract, they would have to acquire his rights from the Dynamo and also clear a roster spot. Even with the additional two homegrown roster spots officially announced by Major League Soccer on Tuesday, the first team roster is full at 30.
