Reading United edge Ocean City Nor’easters, West Chester United stay unbeaten

A deflected goal gave Reading United a 1-0 win over rival Ocean City Nor’easters in the Premier Development League game of the week on Friday night in Exeter Township.

Scoreless through 81 minutes, Reading found the breakthrough in the 82nd minute when Hugo Delhommelle delivered a low cross to Aaron Molloy and his shot was deflected past Ocean City goalkeeper Todd Morton (West Chester, Pa.). The goal was the second of the season for Molloy

Philadelphia Union Academy grad Mo Conde (Philadelphia, Pa.) had to leave the match early after a violent collision. He was replaced by C.J. Smolyn (Holland, Pa.), who put in a solid showing with his first minutes of the season.

Reading and Ocean City are now tied for second in the Mid-Atlantic Division with nine points, three behind 4-0-0 New York Red Bulls U23.

The Shafer brothers both scored and Pedro Sousa bagged his second winner of the season in Buxmont’s 3-2 win in their home opener on Saturday.

Philip Shafer opened the scoring in the 9th minute and his brother David Shafer put the home team up 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. The visitors pulled a goal back but in the 68th minute but Sousa’s 78th minute strike secured all three points for Torch FC (2-1-1).

The Stars were unable to overcome a four-goal onslaught from Clarkstown in the first half and a second half red card in a 5-2 loss on the road Sunday.

Bill Walleekendeh’s first of the season put Junior Lone Star up in the 11th minute, but Emerson Lawrence scored the first of his two first half goals a minute later and Junior Lone Star could only manage a 90th minute goal from Kouassi N’Guessan the rest of the way. Forward Anthony Allison was sent off in the 61st minute.
