Curtin: Elías Aguilar ‘not a fit’ for the team

Costa Rican international midfielder Elías Aguilar’s time with the Philadelphia Union has come to an end, and it appears as though he won’t be joining the club.

Head coach Jim Curtin said Aguilar was “not a fit for the team” during a press conference on Tuesday.

He also pushed back against reports of contract negotiations getting hung up over a disagreement over whether a deal with his current club, CS Herediano in Costa Rica, would be a loan or sale of the 25-year-old attacking midfielder.

“He came in had a good four days of training with the group,” Curtin said. “He was not a fit for the team. So again, I’ve read reports now that there’s all these financial discussions going on; it’s never even gotten to anything in terms of money or financials or loans or buying. Took a look. Talented player, but at the same time wasn’t a fit for us.”

Aguilar trained with the club last week and while initial reports from Costa Rica characterized his time in Chester as a trial, Curtin insisted in a press conference last week that it was only a training stint and noted that there could be any number of players coming through to train with the club this summer.

The Union have one spot open on the first team roster and two international slots available between the first team and Bethlehem Steel FC.
