Rate the U: Swept by Atlanta

Playing Atlanta United 11v11 for 90 minutes resulted in three more points dropped for the Philadelphia Union in a 2-0 loss on Saturday night at home.

While the Union didn’t look awful nor outplayed in large stretches of the game, their finishing was again poor and not even a vintage Andre Blake performances could keep the league’s most potent off the scoreboard.

Blake was responsible for the penalty on Miguel Almiron that led to Josef Martinez raising his league-leading goal total to 18, but the Jamaican international was also instrumental in keeping the game close. He had six saves on the night, including a lovely diving effort on Almiron in the first half. Keegan Rosenberry made a couple key interventions of his own to keep Atlanta in check.

CJ Sapong, meanwhile, extended his scoreless drought to five straight starts and 10 matches overall without a goal. Alejandro Bedoya and Borek Dockal both had clear chances at goal while Fafa Picault and Ilsinho generated scoring opportunities from the wings.

Haris Medunjanin returned from his three-game suspension having made a pair of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup appearances but didn’t have one of his better games. All three of head coach Jim Curtin’s subs were for offense, but no one among the trio of David Accam, Cory Burke and Marcus Epps was able to keep the Union from being shut out for the ninth time this season in 18 matches.
