Union Take Control of Eastern Conference With Emphatic 3-0 Win Over New England Revolution

With goals from Carlos Ruiz, Carlos Valdes, and Sheanon Williams, the Philadelphia Union dominated their game with the New England Revolution en route to a 3-0 win on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium. The win gave Philadelphia a two-point lead atop the Eastern Conference over the New York Red Bulls, but the Union have played two less games.

Nearly every facet of the game went in the Union’s favor. They controlled over 60% of the possession throughout the match, and recorded seven shots on target. The Revolution, meanwhile, did not record a single shot on goal. New England’s disadvantage was exacerbated in the 66th minute when midfielder Benny Feilhaber was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Carlos Ruiz, leaving the Revs with only ten players.

The Union’s third and final goal was scored by Williams, and it was particularly sweet for the right back, who is a Boston native. It was his first goal in his MLS career. Carlos Valdes also recorded his first career MLS goal with his tally in the 24th minute. Sebastien Le Toux got his seventh assist of the year on Valdes’s goal.

Philadelphia will now return home to play two international friendlies in the next week. The first will be on Wednesday against Everton FC at PPL Park, and the second will be on Saturday against Real Madrid CF at Lincoln Financial Field. The Union return to MLS play on Friday, July 29, when they host the Colorado Rapids at PPL Park.
