League Source: Mondragon Has Broken Right Ring Finger

A league source has told the Brotherly Game that Faryd Mondragon suffered a broken right ring during the first half of the Philadelphia Union’s 2-1 loss against Real Salt Lake. The Union have yet to officially name what Mondragon’s injury is.

Broken fingers take between three and six weeks to heal fully, according to Web MD online. The typical process for treatment of such injuries is to have a splint placed on the finger, or in the least have the area taped and immobilized. Discomfort and pain remain until the finger is healed and any type of activity that could further injury or aggravate the finger is discouraged, per the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper was substituted off during halftime in favor of Zac MacMath, the team’s first round pick (fifth overall) in the 2011 SuperDraft. In discomfort after conceding a corner, Mondragon went to the ground and was received by the referee. After a few seconds of discussion with the referee, Mondragon was back in net and made it through the remainder of the first half.

Mondragon was credited, by Opta, with two saves, one punch and two recoveries during his 45 minutes in net, but let in both of Salt Lake's goals. MacMath stepped in and held the 2010 MLS champions at two goals, providing the Union with confidence in front of their new goalkeeper.
