Chris Pontius announces retirement
Pontius posted “Signing out CP13” on social media
Former Philadelphia Union winger Chris Pontius announced on his Instagram on Tuesday that he’s “signing out” on his 11-year MLS career.
The 32-year-old Yorba Linda, California native posted a photo from his time with D.C. United, where he spent his first seven seasons, but Union fans will remember he had one of his most productive seasons with the blue and gold in 2016.
That year he tied a career high with 12 goals and set a new career high in assists with six en route to being named the MLS Comeback Player of the Year.
The following January, he earned his first cap for the USMNT when he checked into a friendly against Serbia and went on to earn four more caps in a friendly against Jamaica and three games in the 2017 Gold Cup.
Over two seasons with the Union, Pontius had 14 goals and 12 assists in 63 appearances and 59 starts.
He signed as a free agent with the LA Galaxy after the 2017 season and spent his final two seasons with his hometown club.
